3 Reasons To Buy American-Made Clothing

If you live in the United States, you may be surprised to learn that only about 2% of clothing purchased by Americans is actually made in the United States. The vast majority of clothing that Americans purchase is manufactured abroad and shipped to the United States. However, there is a growing movement of American individuals who choose to shop locally for domestic-made clothing. There are several reasons why this is a good idea.

Support American Workers

If you purchase clothing made in the United States, then you are supporting businesses that hire American workers. This helps maintain jobs for Americans and can also help bolster the economy since those workers will spend the majority of their income inside the United States. When jobs that could be completed in the United States are sent overseas, more American workers end up competing for fewer jobs, putting a strain on the U.S. economy.

Support Ethical Manufacturing Processes

Most businesses move their manufacturing processes abroad because it is cheaper to hire labor, and there may be extensive tax incentives for their business. However, many countries where manufacturing takes place have few labor laws. This means that workers in these countries may be working long hours for extremely low wages in unsafe factory conditions. Since the labor market in the U.S. often has stricter policies regarding working conditions and minimum wage, it is likely that the people who make your American-made clothing are treated more fairly than those who manufacture clothing in many other countries.

Reduce Environmental Impacts

Another reason that many companies move their manufacturing process abroad is that other countries, such as China, often have fewer policies regarding environmental pollution during production. Factories in the United States are required to adhere to basic standards to reduce air and water pollution during the manufacturing process, but factories in other countries often do not meet the same standards. While this currently creates problems in other countries, issues such as water pollution and air pollution can quickly become a global issue.

Additionally, when clothing is manufactured abroad, it must be transported to the United States for sale. Transportation, usually by ship, creates vast amounts of air and water pollution and uses non-renewable energy sources. When clothing is manufactured in the U.S., the environmental impact of its transportation is significantly less. It is reduced even more if you are able to buy your goods locally.
